Ah Juba. How I love thee…

So, I arrived back in Juba today after a long haiatus in Khartoum and Nairobi.  Today’s tidbit came from one of our drivers who was very late to meet us at our office.  He was late because, after some rain today, he got stuck behind a truck that was stuck in the mud.  He tried to go around it and got stuck himself.  Some very friendly Sudanese helped haul him out.

And then, demanded money for the service.  Of course.

When it was realized that the driver had no money, the helpful Samaritans took the keys.  Just lovely.  A long story short, it seems that the owner of the car (a really nice guy named Peter) had to get on the phone and promise to pay some money for the “service”.

Sometimes, I wonder about this place.
